Narrowboat 2008
Alarm
Yesterdays Run 8 miles 17 locks
An even slower start today, we walked/ran into Nantwich and were attacked by a shower of rain, Charlotte and I were obliged to take coffee and doughnuts in the very elegant main street. Once the rain clears it's a lovely town, I think we concluded that last year, with a beautiful 11th century(?) church, well worth a look.My phone has a swarm of messages from the alarm monitoring company in NZ. Apparently the battery in the alarm is on the blink and needs replacement. After a bit of thought I try to connect to the home email, with no success, could this be a power failure, again? A text message to Garth is in order.
My cold is much nastier and I was able to get supplies at the local pharmacy. (tissues, paracetemol, etc.) Luckily nobody else seems afflicted to the same extent. The Napton people rang back and it seems the loo requires spares that they have ordered. In the mean time number twos are limited to the forward utilities.
Once underway we pretty much kept going. The weather remained patchy with lots of wind but no more significant rain. One lady coming the other way reported that they had been soaked in the morning but we saw no more sign.
There was some consternation at the Hurleston Junction as the combination of wind and current made boat control pretty difficult and the turn from the south is quite tight. Lynn has started to really get control of the boat in the locks and in the narrow Llangollen canal. Soon we will put her in charge of a digital camera.
We pretty much only stop in the afternoon for the locks and lift bridges as we want to have a drink at one of the pubs that our neighbour a few days ago recommended. In the end we walked to the Swan Inn at Marbury, a really nice village with a supurb church and immaculate houses and gardens. The map says this is a great place to stop, we'd have to agree.
Lynn had to return to the boat to collect her antique camera, so we thought, “oh. great opportunity to hide and surprise her.”. We waited. And waited. In the end I returned to find her. She had been balked by the padlock so another briefing is required.
Managed to speak to Garth about the alarm problems at home and it seems it was simply a power failure, All now corrected. Phew. A couple of hands of 500 and off to bed, another busy day.
